A measuring instrument called a potentiometer is essentially a voltage divider for measuring electrical potential (voltage); this component is an implementation of the same principle, hence the name.
Potentiometers are often used to control electrical equipment, such as volume controls on audio equipment. Potentiometers operated by mechanical devices can be used as position sensors, for example in joysticks. Potentiometers are rarely used to directly control larger powers (beyond watts) because the power dissipation in a potentiometer is comparable to the power in a controlled load.
There are many terms used in the electronics industry to describe certain types of potentiometers:
Slip Can or Slip Can: A potentiometer that is usually adjusted by sliding the wiper left or right (or up and down depending on the installation) with a finger or thumb.
Thumb pot or thumbwheel pot: Small rotary potentiometer, not often adjusted by the pinky wheel.
Trim Potentiometer or Trimmer Pot: A trimmer pot is usually meant to be adjusted once or an electrical signal that is not commonly used to "trim".
